Trump Administration Offers Buyout to Federal Workers

Resignation Offer Aims to Reshape Federal Workforce

The Trump administration has officially offered around 2 million federal workers a chance to take a ‘deferred resignation.’ This essentially means they can agree to resign now, and in return, they’ll continue to receive their pay until September. Officials predict that between 5% and 10% of the workforce could take them up on this offer, potentially saving the government about $100 billion. It’s a clear push to reshape the federal workforce while trimming costs, at least according to the administration’s plans.

Press Secretary Highlights Importance of Presence

Eligibility for this buyout is quite broad, covering most full-time federal employees, though certain groups are excluded like military personnel and those involved with immigration or national security. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasised the need for federal workers to focus on serving the public and attending their jobs in person. The administration is making it clear that workers who are looking for a different opportunity can opt for this ‘generous payout,’ which amounts to eight months of salary. It’s certainly a financial incentive for many who might be contemplating their future in government service.

Concerns Raised Over Impact on Federal Services

The process for opting into this programme involves a direct email communication from the administration to the federal workforce, which also included a resignation letter template for convenience. Workers have until February 6 to respond with the word ‘resign’ if they choose to leave. There’s also a reassurance in the email indicating that if they stay, their options aren’t going anywhere soon. The AFGE National President Everett Kelley has offered a harsh critique, framing this strategy as coercive rather than voluntary. His warning about the potential chaos resulting from a mass exodus of experienced civil servants shows the risks the administration is willing to take with such bold measures.
