Democratic Party’s Approval Ratings Plummet After 2024 Elections

Democrats struggle amidst criticism and internal disputes

The Democratic Party’s approval ratings sunk to unprecedented lows in two recent polls, marking troubling times for the party following its disappointing performance in the 2024 elections. An NBC News survey revealed that just 27% of registered voters view the party favourably, which is the lowest since 1990, and a mere 7% reported having a ‘very positive’ opinion. Similarly, a CNN poll also recorded low numbers with only 29% of voters viewing Democrats positively, the worst since 1992, although a notable 63% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents still support the party.

Calls for unity rise as party faces challenges

Last week was particularly chaotic, with tensions running high among Democrats in Congress as they worked to avert a government shutdown. Following the House’s approval of a GOP-led plan, Senate Democrats faced a tough choice: either support legislation that would empower Donald Trump or risk a shutdown that would leave employees without pay. Surprisingly, ten Senate Democrats broke ranks with their party to back the spending deal, avoiding the shutdown but inciting backlash against leaders like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who was criticized for his vote.

Voter sentiment reflects desire for stronger party stance

In light of their political landscape, some Democrats are urging their leadership to unite. For instance, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse criticized the in-fighting within the party, stressing the importance of collaboration as they battle Republicans. He stated, “We’re in a fight for our democracy right now,” emphasising the need to focus on confronting their opponents. Meanwhile, Sen. Chris Murphy expressed understanding for those who chose stability over turmoil, but suggested the party’s struggles in polls could stem from a fear of risk, urging Democrats to stand firm against Trump’s influence. Polls show a significant number of Democratic voters preferring that their party sticks to its convictions rather than compromise.
